KATHMANDU, April 1: The Election Commission (EC) has postponed the updating of the biometric voters´ list carried out in view of the upcoming elections to the Constituent Assembly.

A meeting of the EC office-bearers held on Monday decided to postpone the collection of the biometric voters´ list.

Commissioner at the EC Dr Ayodhi Prasad Yadav said task of collecting biometric voters´ list would resume simultaneously with the citizenship distribution from the third week of April.

The Ministry of Home Affairs has been planning to distribute the citizenship certificate from third week of April.

Yadav said the updating of the voters´ list was postponed following a conclusion that it would be appropriate and practical to do the same based on amendment and review of the existing legal provisions related to elections.

Meanwhile, different 33 fringe political parties including CPN-Maoist submitted a memorandum to Chief Election Commissioner Nil Kantha Upreti stating their inability to participate in the upcoming CA polls under the existing condition.

The leaders of the parties, however, said that they were ready to take part in the elections but not in the present circumstances, CPN-Maoist Secretary Dev Gurung said.

On the occasion, Upreti urged the leaders of the political parties to help conduct the elections instead of creating obstructions.

EC´s spokesperson Harihar Sharma said the dissenting political parties were urged to assist in the election process.
