Drought-stricken villagers receive rice grains

BAJURA, Jan 19:  Five rural villages reeling under a spell of drought in the district received a huge amount of rice grains in assistance. 

The village development committees (VDCs) facing the drought and dry spell received Rs 3 million worth of rice grains under the Food for Work Program.

The World Food Program – Bajura Coordinator, Ganesh Upadhaya, said the villagers were employed on a daily wage basis as manual workers for construction of infrastructure in every wards of the VDCs and were provided rice as part of the support. He added that the Manakot, Dahakot, Rugin, Sappata and Bichaya VDCs received the support. 

The five VDCs of the total of 13 under impact of a drought were selected as they were prone to higher risk and effect, District Agriculture Development Office, Bajura’s Acting Agriculture Development Official, Mani Prasad Jaisi said. 

The program will benefit 3,133 households in five VDCs. The Bichaya village received 72.15 metric tonnes of rice while Dahakot received 112.08, Rugin 72, Manakot 67.05 and Sappata 145.95 metric tonnes of rice grains. 

A local villager from Bichaya, Dharma Raj Sunar, said the program has brought relief as the villagers were forced to live with empty stomachs. RSS
