Some 40 representatives of the traffic police and the DoTM gathered from all 14 zones and five development region offices in a two-day meeting, held at the MTPD´s office in Kathmandu on Sunday and Monday, agreed to prevent license brokers from being present in the trial area, and penalize the driving institutes who modify vehicles for the examinees so that they can easily pass the test, said the MTPD spokesperson Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Pawan Giri.[break]
All provisions in the minimum guidelines the MTPD is currently implementing in the Kathmandu Valley must be practiced throughout the country to check the ever increasing vehicular accidents, the meeting concluded.
The traffic division has been implementing the driving license guidelines strictly since a few months and penalized 40 driving institutes that were found providing the modified vehicles to the examinees.
As a result, only 30 percent of the examinees clear the trials now compared to around 60 percent in the past, the traffic official claimed.
Similarly, the traffic police officials attend the driving trial sessions in uniform, something which was not practiced earlier, to make the process transparent. The distance between the poles set for the trial of both two and four-wheelers would be measured after every examinee´s attempt.
In a bid to stop the illegal practice of imposters taking the trail, the officials would inspect the individual´s citizenship card.
Likewise, the result would be displayed on the spot after the trial as per the current practice of the MTPD. The official websites of the traffic division and the DoTM would also be updated regularly with the license trails result.
“On Monday alone, five examinees were detected with colorblindness at the DoTM medical check-up unit when the traffic team deployed from the MTPD went there for surprise check,” said DSP Giri.
Though the MTPD lacks sufficient budget to adopt international standards in issuing licenses, a strict implementation of current guideline would also be effective, said DSP Giri.
When will the closed trial centers reopen?
