Dr Raghab Dhoj Panta no more

KATHMANDU, July 19:  Senior economist Dr Raghab Dhoj Panta passed away at 1 a.m. on Monday at his residence in Dill Bazaar.



Panta, 66, was suffering from kidney problem for the last one month. He was cremated at Pashupati Aryaghat on Monday itself.[break]



Panta worked for a number of national and international institutions. He also performed his duties as the acting vice-chairman and member of National Planning Commission - the apex policy making body.



A renowned expert in monitory economics, Panta also worked as a research officer at Nepal Rastra Bank and economist at International Monetary Fund. The author of several books on economics, including The Flow of Funds in Nepal, Panta used to write regularly in local papers on economic issues.



A whitepaper on national economy issued by Dr Panta during direct rule of former king Gyanendra had drawn public attention. He had completed his PhD on Inflation in Asia from Carleton University, Canada, in 1979. He is survived by a wife, a son and a daughter.



Paying tribute to Dr Panta, Former Finance Minister and Senior Economic Dr Prakash Chandra Lohani hailed Panta´s professional expertise. “As an individual, he was a very good human being and a good monetary economist. He always spoke his mind,” Lohani said.
