KATHMANDU, Dec 24: Dr Kamal (Nicholas) Bhusal, who was arrested for taking and publicizing a photo of Rabi Lamichhane, Chairman of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), while he was sleeping in the custody of Kaski Police, has been released on Monday.
Kaski Police stated they will investigate him, even while he remains outside of custody.
Dr Nicholas Bhusal, who took Rabi's 'custody photo,' arrested
Police arrested him Sunday evening in Thali, Kathmandu, and transported him to Pokhara early Monday morning. Bhusal confessed to taking a picture of Lamichhane from police CCTV and sharing it online.
He had stated that he took the photo after seeing Lamichhane sleeping on the police CCTV while visiting him last Saturday. “I took the photo after seeing it on the police CCTV. At that time, no one said anything. It was a mistake,” he admitted during a Facebook live broadcast.
Bhusal claimed that RSP activists made the photo viral after he posted it on Facebook. Although Kaski Police had prohibited bringing mobile phones inside the office after Lamichhane's arrest, Bhusal managed to bring his phone past the gate.
After the photo was made public, Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak directed an investigation into the incident. Following this, Kaski Police issued a statement claiming that Bhusal's actions violated cyber laws.
