"The decision of the government to bar people from exercising their rights to freedom and expression is autocratic and against the spirit of the constitution," said the joint statement issued on Friday by Dr KC and Dr Jivan Kshetri, coordinator of Solidarity for Dr KC Alliance.
The statement also credited the people and civil society for the democratic achievements made in the country so far and criticize any attempts at suppressing public dissent. "If the government intends to suppress the people's voices by prohibiting protests, it will bring autocracy and anarchy. We will have to again fight for freedom and justice," the statement added.
"We urge the government to scrap the decision," said the statement, adding, "Otherwise, we will be forced to to stage protests at Maitighar itself to reclaim our right to protest as guaranteed by the constitution."
Meanwhile, the Bibeksheel Sajha Party, issuing a statement on Friday also protested the government decision to ban protests at Maitighar Mandala and called for revocation of the ban.
