KATHMANDU, July 21: After an inordinate delay, the government on Sunday appointed Chief of Protocol at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Dr Niranjan Man Singh Basnyat as Nepal´s envoy to Malaysia. A seasoned diplomat with over 27 years of experience in foreign service, Basnet has earned PhD from the School of Higher International Studies, Paris.

Basnet has served at MoFA and various diplomatic missions abroad in various capacities, including as the head of South Asia Division, director (Nepal) at SAARC Secretariat, Kathmandu, charge d´ affaires at the Nepal Embassy in Paris and consul at Consulate General of Nepal, Hong Kong. Basnet, who joined Nepal´s foreign service as an officer in September, 1986 was due to retire soon. [break]

The government´s decision to appoint only one ambassador even as Nepali missions in other important countries, including in India, are vacant has drawn flak from various quarters. “They should have decided at least for India. The decision to appoint envoys only to New York and Malaysia appears like giving less priority to our close and important neighbor India,” said a diplomat.

Currently, ambassadorial positions in India, Egypt and Thailand are lying vacant. While the position of envoy to Germany is falling vacant within a month, it is now Nepal´s turn to give candidacy for the SAARC secretary general due to fall vacant in March, 2014.
