KATHMANDU, Dec 20: In the coming four years, monorail will run in Kathmandu if everything goes well. After a surface research, Kathmandu Metropolitan City and Lalitpur Metropolitan City have signed memorandum of understanding with a Chinese company to prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) of the monorail. The memorandum was signed with China Railway Construction Corporation (CRCC) amid a special program organized in Kathmandu on Wednesday.
A contract was signed between the mayor of Kathmandu, Bidhya Sundar Shakya and representatives of the company. The contract mentioned that the company should prepare DPR within one year. The concept of monorail was developed with a small research conducted on ring road. The research showed possibility of monorail in Ringroad. This gave rise to the concept of making DPR.

According to the proposal prepared for the possibility of monorail, it will take three years for the construction of rail. If everything goes smoothly, the rail will come into operation in four years. The research has estimated that the construction of rail will cost RS 116 billion. Mayor, Shakya stated that construction of rail would move smoothly if central and provincial government contribute some fund.
The proposal distance of monorail track is 28 kilometers and stations will be installed in 21 different places for pick up and dropping off the passengers.
