KATHMANDU, Oct 14: Doctors have advised people not to panic if infected with dengue. They stated that most cases recover with simple treatment and care, though the infection can become complicated in individuals with chronic illnesses, pregnant women, and children.

Dr Ravi Ranjan Pradhan, the chief doctor at Dhaulagiri Hospital, mentioned that symptoms such as persistent vomiting, nosebleeds, black stools, and fatigue after a dengue infection require special medical attention under the supervision of a doctor.

"You don't need to panic just because you've contracted dengue. Dengue can reduce platelet levels in the body, and in such cases, special care is needed," he said. "It is important to get plenty of rest, drink water and other fluids, and avoid taking random medications."

He added that while dengue can cause complications in some cases, being careless by thinking it is a simple illness can put lives at risk.

The best way to prevent dengue is to avoid mosquito bites, said Chief Physician Dr. Ravi Ranjan Pradhan. He explained that the female Aedes aegypti mosquito, which transmits dengue, breeds in clean, stagnant water. Therefore, it is important not to allow water to accumulate in homes, offices, and public places.

The mosquito that spreads the dengue virus breeds in clean water collected in potholes, old tires, containers, drums, etc., so these should be emptied, said Chief Physician Dr. Pradhan. Dengue infections have been increasing since last June in districts like Kaski and Tanahun of Gandaki Province.

According to data from the Provincial Health Directorate, more than 12,000 cases of dengue have been confirmed across all 11 districts of Gandaki Province so far.

Five people in Kaski, one in Myagdi, and one in Tanahun have died from dengue. According to Ram Bahadur Nepali, Chief of the Health Office in Kaski, dengue infections tend to spread the most from July to November.

He mentioned that dengue has spread rapidly in the provincial capital, Pokhara, in recent times. Chief Nepali emphasized that all sectors need to be aware and responsible for the prevention and control of dengue. He stated that the best way to protect oneself from the disease is to avoid mosquito bites.

He stated that dengue infection in humans is caused by four types of viruses. After contracting dengue, symptoms such as a sudden high fever, bleeding, and pain in the head and body can occur.
