The association of teaching doctors stopped providing day services two weeks ago and stopped teaching three weeks ago demanding separate quotas for medical study for children of doctors. The hospital´s employees´ association had taken exception to comments of anesthesia chief Dr Modnath Marahatta to the media in relation to the strike calling it offensive to staff of the hospital.
Doctors stopped services on Monday claiming that the protesting staff even manhandled Dr Marahatta on Sunday in course of their protest. Dr Marahatta had said, “If the children of peons are allowed to study, why ours are not allowed?” to a national daily drawing ire from over 600 peons working in the hospital. The staff are demanding an apology from Marahatta over the comment while the doctors are adamant that the staff should do so for manhandling Marahatta.
A meeting between the doctors and staff ended amicably later on the day with the doctor issuing a letter denying making the comments attributed to him while the staff have reciprocated by issuing a statement with self criticism for the misbehavior with the doctor.
The association of teaching doctors have verbally committed to start providing services from Tuesday, the hospital administration said.
