KATHMANDU, Jan 31: Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal and the chairman of the main opposition party CPN-UML, KP Sharma Oli, have expressed their concern on the matter of re-investigating the royal palace massacre that resulted in the death of the entire family of King Birendra.
Both Oli and Dahal said that they would take initiatives for a reinvestigation into the royal palace massacre, stating that former King Gyanendra had spread confusion by making political allegations relating to the massacre.
On Sunday, in a conversation with the media on the auspicious occasion of the movie screening 'Nametiney Ghau' based on the story of acid victim Muskan Khatun, UML Chairman Oli questioned the then-investigation committee stating that there was a terrible conspiracy behind the royal palace massacre.
Recently, former King Gyanendra publicly said that there was a political conspiracy. “There are direct witnesses among us and yet there are many of us who are running behind falsehood and conspiracy. It was unjust and unfortunate that I and my family members were being slandered and attacked by spreading misinformation regarding the royal palace massacre,” said former King Gyanendra at a program in Birgunj.
21 years since the royal massacre
At the same time, UML Chairman Oli said that the constitutional monarchy was maintained after the mass movement in 2046 BS, and the heinous and unimaginable royal palace massacre that took place in 2058 BS.
Stating that the massacre of the entire family of the king was related to a terrible conspiracy of modern times, Oli claimed that the plot of the royal palace massacre was well-prepared.
Top leaders Oli and Dahal have made aggressive remarks about the royal palace massacre after former King Gyanendra reached Birgunj and stated that a political conspiracy was created and negative feelings were spread in the minds of Nepalis after the royal palace massacre.
Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal while talking to the media at Simara in Bara said that an investigation will be conducted into the royal palace massacre. PM Dahal said, “The royal palace massacre that took place in 2058 BS will be investigated.”
Oli has been challenging those who want the return of the king, saying that a new story about the royal palace massacre has been created. “Since the royal palace massacre happened in Kathmandu, there was an illusion spread all over the world that Dipendra had killed his family because of a love affair. That was a terrible assassination plot. With that conspiracy, Birendra's family including the then king, queen, crown prince, prince, and princess were killed, and the entire family was destroyed. After King Birendra and Queen Aishwarya and all their children were killed, the monarchy came to an end,” said Oli.
UML and Maoist activists have also been pitted against those advocating the return of monarchy. They have even started replying to the royalists through social media mentioning that monarchy cannot return to the country. Chairman Dahal has already given instructions to mobilize against expressions that are questioning the system.
Last mid-January, RPP Chairman Lingden decided to hold a decisive protest at the party meeting in mid-February. The central movement core committee has been formed under his chairmanship. The committee consists of all the office-bearers of the central working committee and central members. Similarly, a movement mobilization committee has been formed under the coordination of RPP General Secretary Dhawal Shumsher Rana, who is also the head of the organization department of the party, and an economic mobilization committee has been formed under the coordination of Treasurer Nilkantha Kafle, and a publicity and dissemination committee has been formed under the coordination of spokesman and publicity department head Mohan Kumar Shrestha. On this basis, some RPP leaders have been claiming the revival of the monarchy in the country.
Likewise, after the meeting of controversial medical entrepreneur Durga Prasain with former king Gyanendra, and after Prasain said that he would launch a decisive movement for the return of the monarchy, Oli-Dahal started publicly challenging Prasain’s remarks.
In addition to that, Prasain has been claiming that the movement for the return of the king from mid-February will be successful. He also posted a picture of his meeting with former King Shah on social media and hinted at the upcoming movement.
Similarly, Madhav Kumar Nepal, chairman of the ruling CPN (Unified Socialist), has been stating that the return of the monarchy in Nepal is like a daydream.
