Do not impose Property Tax: NCC

KATHMANDU, June 2: Businessmen on Tuesday asked the new prime minister not to implement property taxes, saying that the country was not in a position to implement it. They argued that it could have a longer-term negative impact on the economy. [break]



Meeting with Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal, a delegation of Nepal Chamber of Commerce (NCC) on Tuesday also pushed for implementation of the multiple VAT rate system. “It (multiple VAT rate system) will greatly facilitate in the effective enforcement of VAT,” said the NCC President Surendra Bir Malakar, who led the delegation.



The NCC delegation also pleaded with the PM to give high priority to economic agendas and to work towards creating a business-friendly climate that fosters private sector investment. The delegation also asked the PM to eliminate scrap taxes and the transporters´ syndication system, saying that they were mainly contributing to the high rise in commodity prices.



In reply, Nepal made commitments that the new government would seriously work for the industrial and economic growth of the country. “We understand that we must create economic opportunities if we are to sustain the present political gains,” Nepal stated, while assuring the delegation that the new government would work in close coordination with the private sector.



According to an NCC statement, Nepal cited employment creation, economic advancement, infrastructure development, and the effective delivery of education and health services as areas of his priority. He also stated that the new government would do all it takes to create a banda- and strike- free environment in the country.
