DHARAN, March 18: After a private sector company discovered an underground water source in Dharan municipality of Sunsari district, locals are optimistic of a long term solutions to the water scarcity in the city.

The underground water source was found some eight months ago during a test drill carried out for the Asian Development Bank funded drinking water project. The unearthing of a more abundant source of drinking water has made the authorities and stakeholders including the locals confident that a solution to their water woes was in sight.

A company was hired to scout source of underground water at three different locations of Dharan Municipality: Putali Line, Dharan-10, Dhankuta road section, Dharan-8, and Everest Line, Dharan-15.

Reshma Deep Boring Table Industry, a private company based in Biratnagar, found the sources at the site for the new buildings being constructed for Kathmandu’s Bhat Bhateni Supermarket Store’s branch at Putali Line, Gorkha Departmental Store at Dhankuta Road and a hotel in Dharan Municipality.

“Currently, Dharan locals are facing acute shortage of drinking water, but a joint initiatives for drinking water could solve the problem of water scarcity for the next 50 years,” said Yuwaraj Baral, the owner of the deep boring company that discovered the water source.

As a long term solution to the acute shortage of drinking water, the ADB-supported drinking water project, being implemented by Dharan Municipality, is expected to be complete by 2017.

For the project, technicians had found sufficient sources of drinking water at Kumbhiaahal of Dharan-17 and at Kumarkhat community forest, located at 6 km south of Dharan city. The initiative is a part of the integrated urban development project supported by ADB with an investment of USD 22 million.

Meanwhile, Bishnu Kafle, manager of Reshma Deep Boring Table Industry, said that past claims about lack of underground source of drinking water in Dharan was baseless. “We have found sufficient sources of water at many places in Dharan,” said Kafle.  According to him, the underground source is not likely to dry in future as the water was found sufficiently at the depth of 950 feet. However, the water is still being tested to ascertain whether it is safe for drinking purpose.

“In the memory of my mother, the water to be brought from the underground will be supplied and distributed to locals residing nearby the hotel at free of cost in future,” said hotel entrepreneur Lok Khapung.
