KATHMANDU, Jan. 3: The Livestock Health Services Directorate has urged one and all to exercise high alertness and take good care of the health of fowls and pet animals at home.

The risk of H5N1 virus or bird flu spreading out is high during winter and thereby the need for extra alertness during the season.

The directives comes in wake of the confirmation of bird flu in areas neighboring the capital.

It may be noted that the Directorate had a few days ago claimed that the outbreak of aviation influenza or bird flu had been brought under control in Kathmandu.

After reports of bird flu in poultry farms in Ramkot and Sitapaila of Kathmandu, the Directorate confirmed the H5N1 virus in locally bred chickens in Chaughada of Nuwakot.

Talking to RSS, senior livestock health officer and spokesperson of the Directorate Dr Narayan Prasad Ghimire said high alertness must be maintained and any suspicion regarding the fowls must be reported to the nearby livestock health services office.

Fowls avoiding feed, standing still with head down and excreting saliva could be symptoms of being infected by the H5N1 virus.

He also said that the detection of bird flu in home grown chickens in Nuwakot calls for serious and stringent investigation.
