JUMLA, Dec 13:  With the dipping temperature, the number of patients has increased significantly at the Karnali Institute of Health and Sciences (KIHS) in Jumla.

According to the hospital, most of the patients are suffering from common cold and asthma. As informed by Meghraj Budha of the KIHS, only 5 to 10 patients used to visit the hospital on a daily basis earlier. But now, the number has reached to more than 50 per day. In the past, patients were obliged to go to Nepalgunj or Surkhet for treatment but now they go to KIHS for treatment.

Especially, the elderly people and children are falling ill due to the freezing cold. It has just been two weeks that the cold has started taking toll on the lives of people. A lot of people visit the hospital seeking treatment for pneumonia, common cold, fever and various allergies.

Children have been suffering from cold and fever while the elderly people are struggling with pneumonia and asthma. Dr. Pujan Rokaya, medical superintendent of the hospital, said, "We have been suggesting the family members of the patients to provide them special care during this season."

Doctors have urged the people to visit hospital or health post immediately if they encounter some health problems.

Besides that, locals have been told to drink hot water, wear warm clothes, drink liquid and pay special attention to sanitation and hygiene. As women are involved in various household works, they might easily develop cold or other infection. Therefore, it is very important for them to wash their hands after work and wear warm clothes, according to doctors.
