Didn't pay attention in class, regrettably so?

KATHMANDU, Dec 18: Many of us look back at our school/college days and regret that we didn’t pay enough attention in class, didn’t ask that many questions and simply let the “learning phase” go to waste.



Remember how you, not only made it hard for your teachers by passing notes and asking irrelevant questions, but disturbed the entire class which had at least half a dozen students who showed up at school with the intention to learn something new and make use of the financial investment.[break]



When asked what subject you wish you had paid more attention to in school, Preeti Karna said since school days she’s been running from Math and she still hasn’t gotten the hang of it, even in Biomedical college. “It’s true that if you are afraid of something, it never leaves you and the same is happening to me,” she added.



Nirmal Kurtyel said his weakness in school was Nepali. He said, “Despite Nepali being our native language, I used to get low marks in the subject and it was embarrassing.”



Similarly, Gaurab Luitel said, “I wish I had paid more attention in Nepali. I would have my ‘raswya’s and ‘dirga’s in place.”



Prasim Gurung said, “I still cannot solve English grammar questions and I passed all my exams with literature sections like letter writing, stories and essays. I regret not giving grammar enough time and interest because I have realized how important it is.”



“I used to pay attention in almost all the subjects and I was regarded a good student but I wish we had a good English teacher. I now realize that my English is not good and I need to improve a lot,” said Samikshya Bashishtha.



We are all familiar with Samikshya’s situation, most educational institutions in Nepal lack teaching staff that understand the power they have. We have all come across at least one or two teachers who were qualified but couldn’t make much impact on their students. Or sadly, teachers who weren’t qualified at all.



But let’s not put all the blame on teachers because they are always trying to make an effort to make us understand and sometimes students are the ones who are in the way of an effective learning environment.



So, clear all your confusions and just ask your Math teacher to explain the difference between permutation and combination one more time because you pay to be in school, not the other way around!
