Dhulikhel Hospital distributing relief package to discharged patients

BANEPA, May 15: The deadly earthquake of April 25 came as a cruel blow to Ram Prasad Upreti of Pangretar VDC-1, Sindhupalchowk and his happy family.

"It killed all my happiness my wife is dead and my son is critically injured," said Ram Prasad. According to him, it damaged the house his family lived in and reduced to rubble his hotel at Lamosanghu bazaar, the only source of income for the family of five.

Ram Prasad's son Shreeram underwent treatment at Dhulikhel hospital for 16 days. As he was in hospital attending on his son, he could not receive the relief materials for quake victims that were distributed back in his home.Maila Tamang of Maneswara VDC-4, Sindhupalchowk is going through a similar plight. He lost his son in the earthquake and his wife was injured. And he also missed out on the relief materials.

Over 400 individual have not received relief materials distributed in their villages as they were attending on injured family members at Dhulikhel hospital.

The hospital itself has now stepped forward and extended a helping hand to such quake victim. It has provided them relief materials, including food items, tents and tarpaulins.

With the tarpaulin received from the hospital, Ram Prasad put up a tent in his village on Monday. According to him, his belongings are still buried under debris of his house and hotel.

"Thanks to better treatment at the hospital, my son is now able to walk slowly," he said. "The hospital managed relief materials for us also."

Upon listening to frequent cases of displaced quake victims not getting any relief materials, the hospital officials have come up with a relief support package of their own according to business manager of the hospital, Pradyumna Shrestha.

He informed that the package includes a tarpaulin a sleeping mat and blanket, a hygiene kit (toothpaste with brush and soap), a sack of rice, 15 packets of noodles, salt, edible oil, sugar, pulses, biscuits and vegetable spices. It also contains a set of clothes, handkerchief, slippers, cooking utensils, bucket and plates.

"Dhulikhel hospital has managed the relief materials out of its relief materials out of its own resources and support from donors," said Shrestha.

He added that the hospital has been providing food to the patients and all members of their families sheltering at the hospital. The houses of 200 of the hospital staffers have also been damaged in the earthquake. Out of these, 40 have been provided with tarpaulins and 10 with food items.

"The hospital has staff of its own affected by the earthquake, but we have not stopped our treatment services and relief material distribution to the patients," said administrative director Dr Rajendra Koju. "We've been extending our services round the clock."

Meanwhile, Dr Ramkantha Makaju Shrestha, Vice-chancellor of Kathmandu university, told Republica. "At Dhulikhel Hospital and Kathmandu University, we have put in place the 3Rs—RETURNING the recuperated survivors home, helping them in REBUILDING and also helping in their REHABILITATION.

According to the hospital, over 2,000 patients, who required treatment services ranging from critical to general, have benefited as of Tuesday afternoon.
