KATHMANDU, April 22: Devyani Rana, whose name surfaced during the 2001 royal palace massacre, is now busy campaigning for her mother-in-law who was denied ticket by the ruling Congress (I) party.

According to CNN-IBN news portal, Devyani has been campaigning for her mother-in-law Veena Singh, who is the daughter of Congress stalwart Arjun Singh, India’s human resources minister. [break]

Veena is contesting as an Independent candidate from Seedhi constituency in the Madhya Pradesh state for the ongoing Lok Sabha elections after she was denied Congress ticket.

"It´s a privilege for me to be the daughter-in-law of this family. Public service is our mission,” says Devyani, according to the news portal. “My father is in active politics in Nepal for 40 years and campaigning is not new to me." Devyani is the daughter of Pashupati Shumsher Rana, the chairman of Rastriya Prajatantra Party.

Notwithstanding the ‘insult’ from his party, Minister Singh was seen crying on stage during a party programme on April 7, according to the news portal.

Devyani was married to Aishwarya Singh in February 2007.

Official enquiry into the 2001 palace massacre said the refusal of then Crown Prince Dipendra´s parents to consent to his marriage with his girlfriend, Devyani, was the cause of the massacre that saw the death of 11 members of the royal family including King Birendra and Queen Aishwarya.
