According to Bharat Shakya, a section officer at the ministry, district development committees have been asked to provide the data of roads in their respective districts. [break]
The ministry has already collected data from 69 districts. The ministry plans to have a comprehensive data on roads within two to four months. Officials said that the country lacks an updated official data due to lack of coordination among different stakeholders involved in the development of roads.
Besides the government, bilateral and multi-lateral donors like the World Bank, Asian Development and the Department for International Development are also involved in the development of roads in Nepal.
Each stakeholder has maintained individual records of roads.
“We don´t have a culture of planning culture or maintaining data which is why we do not have any reliable official data on road,” said Shakya.
The ministry allocates approximately Rs 1 billion every year for developing road. The recent trend in budget allocation shows that 60 percent of the total budget is allotted to local development ministry is spent in the road sector.
