KATHMANDU, May 8: Despite strong objections from various quarters, Lok Man Singh Karki has been sworn in as chief commissioner of the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) amid a program at the president´s office in Shital Niwas on Wednesday morning.
Acting Chief Justice (CJ) Damodar Prasad Sharma administered oath of office and secrecy to Karki at the presence of President Dr Ram Baran Yadav. [break]
Likewise, Kayo Devi Yami and Bhanu Prasad Acharya were also administered oath of office and secrecy as chairperson of the Public Service Commission (PSC) and Auditor General respectively by acting CJ Sharma in separate programs this morning.
Similarly, newly appointed CIAA chief commissioner Karki administered oath of office and secrecy to Keshab Baral as a commissioner of the CIAA.
Constitutional Council (CC) on Sunday had recommended President Ram Baran Yadav to appoint Karki as the CIAA chief, Kayo Devi Yami as the chairperson of PSC and Bhanu Prasad Acharya as the auditor general in line with the recommendation earlier made by the High Level Political Committee (HLPC).
However, swearing ceremony was delayed following widespread protests from various quarters including political parties, civil society members and students organizations over Karki’s recommendation as CIAA head.
On Tuesday, a meeting of the our major political forces --UCPN (Maoist), Nepali Congress, CPN-UML and United Democratic Madhesi Front (UDMF) -- had also failed to agree on reconsidering the controversial nomination of Karki as head of the anti-graft body.
