RUPANDEHI, April 12: The departmental teams Tribhuvan Army Club and Armed Police Force (APF) Club have won a gold medal each in lawn tennis in the ongoing Eighth National Games in Butwal on Thursday.
In the team event at the Lawn Tennis Court in Devinagar, Army won the gold in women’s category, while APF won in men’s.
In men’s team event, APF defeated Army on straight sets of 3-0 to claim the gold medal.
Likewise, in women’s team event, Army saw off APF 2-1 to claim the gold medal.
Departmental teams dominate Speaker’s Volleyball Cup
Also, Prerana Koirala and Rayana Shah have entered into the semifinals in women’s singles category. Koirala saw off Anne Mathema 6-2, 6-2, while Shah beat Shreya Bhattarai 6-1, 6-1.
In men’s singles category, Bhishma Kauchha, Samrakshyak Bhushan Bajracharya, Nabin Magar and Samyak Bhushan Bajracharya have advanced into the quarterfinals.
Kauchha saw off Sanjay Shrestha 7-5, 6-3, 7-6, while Samrakshyak beat Dawa Sonam Sherpa 6-3, 6-1. Likewise, Magar defeated Iwek Joshi 6-1, 6-1, while Samyak overcame Nishant Shrestha 6-0, 6-0.
Ram Bahadur BK and Shesmani Chaudhary saw off Nishant Shrestha and Kumar GC 7-5, 6-3, 10-6, while Chandra Thapa and Bikash Khadka beat Krishna Gobind and Shivram Magar 6-1, 6-1. Also, Samrakshyak and Paudel defeated Kauchha and Sanjay 6-1, 6-3 to reach the last eight.
Hockey
Another departmental team Nepal Police has defeated Gandaki Province in men’s hockey. Police, which is making its first participation in hockey, comfortably saw off Gandaki 5-0.
In the other games played on the same day, Army beat Province 2 1-0, while Province 7 cruised to a 3-0 victory over Karnali Province.
Squash
Province 3’s Bhawana Sunuwar and Gandaki Province’s Krishna Thapa have registered double wins in the round robin league of squash women’s singles.
Sunuwar defeated Gandaki’s Salini Ghimire 11-2, 11-0, 11-1 and Swasthani Shrestha 11-5, 11-4, 11-7. Also, Thapa saw off Ghimire 11-2, 11-0, 11-1 and Province 3’s Manjila Magar 11-3, 11-2, 11-3. Also, Province 3’s Bipana Blon overcame her province mate Magar 11-1, 11-4, 11-4.
Table tennis
Police has claimed two gold medals in table tennis as well. Police won the medals in women’s team event and women’s doubles.
In team event, Police’s Alina Maharjan saw off APF’s Selisha Khadgi 3-1.
Nabita of Police, who won two back to back games, beat APF’s Anita Maharjan 3-0 and Khadgi 3-1. In women’s singles, APF’s Sikka Suwal beat Police’s Manju Suwal 3-1. Army and Province 3 became joint-third.
In women’s doubles, Police’s Nabita and Alina beat Army’s Swekshya Nemwang and Rabina Maharjan 11-8, 11-7, 11-8.
Basketball
All three departmental teams Army, Police and APF started with wins in basketball.
Police beat Karnali Province 93-29, APF saw off Province 5 74-40 and Army defeated Gandaki Province 78-36. Also, Sudurpaschim Province overcame Province 2 65-21.
