KATHMANDU, April 27: Minister for Home Affairs Ram Bahadur Thapa has started deliberations to formulate security policy at the provincial level.

Home Minister Thapa attended a meeting with all the concerned authorities at Simara of Bara on Wednesday to devise security strategy for Province 2.

“The meeting was organized as part of the home ministry's move to develop province-wise security policy as each province has some common as well as unique security challenges,” Kiran Bhattarai, press coordinator of the home minister, said.

The council meeting was attended by Internal Affairs and Law Minister of Province 2 Gyanendra Kumar Yadav, provincial heads of security agencies -- Nepal Police, Armed Police Force, National Investigation Bureau and Nepal Army -- and chief district officials of all eight districts at Simara of Bara district. The meeting discussed in detail the security challenges facing the provinces and possible strategies to ensure peace and stability, said Kiran Bhattarai, press coordinator of the home minister.

According to Bhattarai, all the security and administrative heads of the provinces briefed the minister on the security situation in the province. Minister Thapa instructed the officials concerned to get tough against criminal activities like organized crime, cross-border smuggling, human trafficking and corruption, and make necessary preparations to deal with flooding.

“After holding similar meetings in the all provinces, the ministry will draft province-wise security policy,” Bhattarai said.

According to Bhattarai, the ministry has asked the security agencies in Province 2 to prioritize their activities in line with the 82-point work plan issued by the ministry earlier.

A similar meeting of the home minister has been scheduled for Satuday with Province 5 officials in Bhairahawa. Likewise, the home minister will meet with Province 3 officials on May 1.

“Other provinces are yet to finalize the date for their meeting with the home minister,” he said.
