"Yes, we have sought a report from the home department. We will have to see it before deciding anything," IANS wire service quoted Indian Home Secretary GK Pillai as saying on Friday about the deportation.
According to the Press Trust of India (PTI), the Union Home Ministry sought the explanation, saying Pune police may have exceeded their brief in deporting Neetu.
Neetu was arrested the night of December 5 and deported to Kathmandu the next day. Pune DCP (Special Branch) Ravindra Sengaonkar said the decision to deport her was taken after she was found involved in "anti-national activities".
Following the incident, women´s groups and FTII students were planning to take up the issue with Indian Home Minister P Chidambaram and the National Commission for Women and demand that Neetu be allowed to return to India and complete her studies, IANS reported.
The DCP refused to divulge further details of the case which has been taken up by the All India Democratic Women´s Association (AIDWA), alleging that Neetu´s deportation was ordered by Pune police at the instance of her husband Amaresh, PTI reported.
Amresh Singh is an influential Nepali Congress leader and was a member of the interim parliament from 2007 to 2008. He is regarded as having links with top Indian politicians.
Neetu was in touch with AIDWA since June 2008 with a complaint of harassment by her husband who wanted her to quit the FTII course, PTI quoted AIDWA´s Kiran Moghe as saying.
"If she has indulged in anti-national activities here, police should have filed a case and tried her in India instead of sending her back to Nepal", Moghe said while alleging that police had acted in connivance with Amresh Singh.
Pune police has refused to give details of the deportation, saying it is not supposed to share such details. Sengaonkar said "We are not supposed to share details. The case is high-profile and various investigative agencies are involved."
Asked if the deportation had anything to do with Amresh, Sengaonkar said: "The police isn´t concerned about her domestic problems. She was deported considering national security."
