KATHMANDU, Jan 15: The cabinet meeting appointed Deependra Bahadur Kshetry as the governor of Nepal Rastra Bank, the central bank, on Thursday.
Sources informed that Finance Minister Dr Baburam Bhattarai proposed Kshetry for governor and the proposal was passed by the cabinet.[break]
Last Tuesday a three-member committee had recommended Deependra Bahadur Kchetri, Dr Sri Ram Poudel and Bir Bikram Rayamajhi as candidates for the top post.
A cabinet source said that Kshetry was appointed despite protest from Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist-Leninist). General Secretary of CPN-UML Jhala Nath Khanal had not agreed on Kshetry`s name while talking to Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal over telephone before the meeting.
Khanal had maintained that the governor should be the one recommended by his party. The source also added that the PM told Khanal that the appointment of governor comes under the Ministry of Finance currently headed by a Maoist minister.

Kshetry, had served at the central bank for about 30 years and retired from the post of executive director of the bank in April 2007. He served as a member of National Planning Commission from April 2007 to August 2008 and played an important role in drafting and finalizing the three-year Interim Plan of Nepal.
Born in May 1949 in Syangja district, Kshetry earned his Master´s Degree in Economics from Tribhuvan University in 1973. He also completed Master´s degree in Agricultural Economics from the University of New England, Australia in 1986.
The post of NRB’s governor became vacant after the government last week decided to remove suspended governor Bijaya Nath Bhattarai, who has been facing corruption charges. The decision was taken on the recommendation of a committee headed by former Supreme Court Justice Udaya Raj Upadhyaya.
