KATHMANDU, July 16: The state-owned Dairy Development Corporation (DDC) on Tuesday launched Slim Milk -- low fat milk amid a program on the occasion of its 45th anniversary. [break]

The milk, which costs Rs 22 for 500 ml, will be available in the market from Wednesday.

DDC said that the milk contains only 0.5 percent fat and 85 percent SNF, and is specially targeted for people with diabetes, heart ailment and obesity. "As Slim Milk contains required amount of protein, calcium and vitamin, it can be consumed for healthier life by other people as well," said Siyaram Prasad Singh, the general manager of DDC.

Currently, DDC has around 2,000 booths, 20 distributors, 70 dealers, 10 sales outlets and 60 franchise shops through out the country. Singh said that DDC will focus on expanding its network to ensure that everyone gets access to DDC´s new product.

On the occasion, DDc also unveiled its future plans, which includes a plan to install automatic butter packing machine at its plant in Balaju and produce high quality butter. For this, Singh said that they have already made a purchase agreement of the machine.

DDC has proposed the government to buy 51 percent share of Dolakha Dairy under Public Private Partnership (PPP) model. DDC is operating the Cattle Feed Plant in Hetauda.

Singh said that DDC is transferring sales outlet project at Lainchour to Khulamtar. It also plans to establish a modern milk and milk product manufacturing plant in two and half years.

The preliminary works to set up skim milk powder plant in Hetauda will be started once the government releases a loan this year, DDC officials informed. It will start the construction of the plant if additional amount is provided by the government.

The government has already appointed experts for business valuation and due diligence audit of skim milk powder factory at Chitwan, and DDC will request the government to allow it to run the factory after the report is received.

"As the cost of fuel is increasing, we aim to replace diesel plant used to operate its boilers with firewood. This will help us reduce the economic burden," said Singh.

Singh said that though DDC was in loss in the fiscal year 2012/13, it has expected a profit of Rs 60 million this fiscal year.

Rai donates 2 ropanis of land to DDC

KATHMANDU (REPUBLICA): Chandrakala Rai has donated two ropanis of land for Ilam-based cheese factory of Dairy Development Corporation (DDC).

Rai handed over the land ownership document to Minister for Agricultural Development Tek Bahadur Thapa Gharti on Tuesday.

Talking to this daily, Rai said she only wanted to see Maipokhari Cheese Production Centre in Sulubang-1 of Ilam to have its own building. “If the cheese factory purchases all the milk produced by farmers, locals do not need to walk for hours to sell their milk,” Rai said.

Currently, the center has production plant in a rented house.

Rai lives in Goldhap of Jhapa with her husband and two daughters. The main occupation of the Rai family is farming.

Dhruba Kalpit Subedi, project manager, Dairy Production and Distribution of DDC, said they will start constructing a new building for the center very soon. The center currently purchases around 1,000 liters of milk from farmers every day.

DDC has a total of 16 cheese production centers in different parts of the country.
