“Within a couple of weeks, we managed to sell eight units of silver utensils,” said Sushil Mohta, the director of Silver Estate. Mohta further added that demand for silver products has increased by 30 percent as compared to the demand on normal days.
Though silver is generally used to make jewelries, the metal holds specific significance in Nepal, especially during festivities. Traders informed myrepublica.com that the demand for silver products generally picks up in the second of the year.
Another New Road based jeweler -- Eco-Design Jewelry - is also coming up with new collection for the approaching festivals. Suman Man Tamrakar, proprietor of the shop said, the collection will include Sukunda, Tikadani and Pujathali, among other utensils required for the festival.
“Our collection will include utensils priced between Rs 5,000 and Rs 30,000,” Tamrakar said, adding that the demand for silver products goes up by about 30 percent during festive occasions.
Among various silver products available at the Silver Estate, a medium size Gagri (typical Nepali drinking water vessel) weighing 150 tola (1 tola=11.664 grams) is priced Rs 100,000, whereas a Kalash (sacred vase) of 35 tola costs Rs 30, 000.
Similarly, the idol of goddess Durga (35 tola) is available at Rs 30,000. Besides these products, other silver utensils necessary for auspicious occasions are also available at the store.
“We get demand for products like Kalash, Tikadani and Gagri, among others only during festive season,” Mohta said, adding that all the products are his store are crafted locally. He also said the business of silver products in the last fiscal grew by about 25 percent as compared to the last year.
