JAJARKOT, April 25: Two dozen government buildings destroyed during the insurgency have not yet been reconstructed, posing a serious accommodation problem for the government offices here.

The government offices have been paying huge amounts in rents for places that are not even suitable for regular works. [break]

District Police Office alone pays Rs 5,00,000 for its 13 units annually. Likewise, District Forest Office (DFO) has been operating at the rented quarters of Nepal Red Cross Society. “We are bearing unnecessary financial burden in want of our own building,” said DFO chief Devendra Lal Karna.

The Maoist rebels had destroyed three buildings belonging to DGO. Locals have encroached on the places where only the remains of old structures lie. In the five years after the peace process started, there has been no sign of efforts by the government to reconstruct the government buildings.

The Maoists had destroyed 10 police units, six forest offices and three postal offices during the decade-long insurgency. Chief District Officer (CDO) Khyam Bahadur Thapa said that repeated requests to the Ministry of Peace and Reconstruction have been of no use so far.

“Reconstruction by local efforts is not viable. The government should take up the responsibility,” he said.
