KATHMANDU, Dec 11: Maoist Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal has asked Minister for Land Reforms Bhim Prasad Gautam to make alternative arrangements for those staying in the land seized by the party before evicting them as per the agreement with other political parties.

At a meeting of the senior leaders from the Maoist establishment, Dahal also asked him to stop the sale of land that would deprive the land tenants of their rights.[break]

"The landlords have been selling their lands depriving the tenants of their rights. So the minister for land reforms should stop this and make alternative arrangements for those staying in the seized lands," politburo member Ninu Chapagain quoted Dahal as saying.

Dahal had expressed concerns over the party´s failure to return the seized land due to opposition from the party faction led by senior leader Mohan Baidya.

"Chairman Dahal clearly stated that the issue of land reforms should be settled and asked the minister to take proactive steps to protect the rights of the tenants," said politburo member Agni Prasad Sapkota.

As per the seven-point peace deal, the Maoists were to return the seized lands to the rightful owners by Nov 24.

Dahal, accompanied by NC leader Krishna Prasad Sitaula and UML leader Bamdev Gautam, had also visited Bardiya district to enforce the agreement, but failed to do so due to opposition not only from the hardliners, but also from the local leaders of the party establishment.

The other political parties, mainly the NC, have taken strong exception to the failure of the Maoists in sincerely implementing the peace agreement.

During the meeting at Baluwatar, leaders also urged the party leadership to present a written strategy for unifying the faction-ridden party.

“The meeting urged the leaders to settle the intra party conflicts through talks with Baidya,” politburo member Shakti Basnet said.
