KATHMANDU, March 18: Stating that ruling parties’ unilateral push for majority-based constitution making process has left them with no choice, UCPN (Maoist) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal has instructed lawmakers from his party to be prepared for resigning from the Constituent Assembly (CA) en masse at anytime.

Addressing an informal meeting of party central committee at party office at Koteshwar, Tuesday, Dahal said finding a meeting point with the ruling sides was not possible while they insist on majority-based process for new constitution.

According to the party leaders, Dahal also told party central committee members that they would be compelled to take to the street if the ruling parties did not show any interest for dialogue and consensus.

“We will not remain in the CA and just quietly watch Nepali Congress (NC) and CPN-UML endorse a status-quo statute through majority-based process. We may quit the CA en masse at that moment,” party central committee member Hemraj Bhanndari quoted Dahal as saying in the meeting.

Dahal further told the party leaders that UCPN (Maoist) may not withdraw its protest if political polarization persisted. The thirty-party opposition alliance led by UCPN (Maoist) has announced month-long protests at district-headquarters and urban areas starting from March 19.

Maintaining that the fresh decision by the Supreme Court (SC) on transitional justice system was tantamount to annulling of the Comprehensive Peace Accord (CPA), UCPN (Maoist) chief Dahal said time had come for all breakaway Maoist factions to reunite for retaliation.

“We had separated for our own cause, but ruling parties’ activities and SC’s verdict forces us to come together,” said Dahal.
Meanwhile, UCPN (Maoist) has decided to let the leaders assigned with the task to lead the protests programs earlier to continue in the same role. The party had decided to let party chief Dahal lead the protest in the central region, leader Baburam Bhattarai in the west and Vice-chairman Narayankaji in the east, said party leader Agni Sapkota.
