CPN-ML Chairman C P Mainali said on Wednesday that there was no immediate possibility of unification of his party with the CPN-UML. “I instead argued that we should put efforts to ensure cooperation between the leftist and democratic forces,” Mainali told Republica. [break]
Mainali and his party colleagues Kumar Belbase and Birendra Thapaliya had held a meeting with UML Chairman Khanal and his party colleague Reghuji Panta at Khanal´s residence in Dallu. During the meeting Khanal had proposed unification between the two leftist parties.
Mainali said that the meeting focused on concurrent political issues and increasing foreign interference in Nepal´s internal affairs. “We have reached an understanding on fighting ethnic and regional parochialism and creating environment for polls,” he said.
The leaders of the two parties concluded that the priority now would be to first create an environment for polls. “We have agreed to work together to create environment conducive to polls. We can then sit together to find an appropriate model of cooperation or alliance for the election,” Mainali said.
Suffering from defection by the party´s senior leaders, UML has expedited negotiations to bring back the leaders, who had left the party for various reasons.
