Police and the cadres clashed after the latter started demonstrating shouting slogans and throwing brickbats as soon as the works of the camp started.[break]
Two police personnel and three Maoist cadres have been injured in the clash that lasted for ten minutes. Police fired 16 rounds of teargas shells to quell the clash. Among those injured in the clash are Assistant Head Constable Man Bahadur Budha and constable Nara Bahadur Acharya of the Armed Police Force and CPN-Maoist cadres Sahabir Mahar, Tek Bahadur Tiruwa and Ram Bahadur Sunar, according to the District Police Office, Surkhet.
Police have arrested nine Maoist cadres and leaders involved in throwing stones on the camp. Those arrested are party central member Bharat Bom, State Committee member JB Sunar, District Committee member Tulsi Prasad Poudel and party workers Khagendra Budha, Som Bahadur Rana, Top Bahadur Chalaune, Dev Bahadur Chalaune, Kul Bahadur Pariyar and Purna Bahadur Pariyar.
The CPN-Maoist Surkhet district committee has warned that it would enforce a general shutdown on Thursday if the arrested party leaders and cadres were not immediately released.
In a press release on Wednesday, the party alleged that the police had tortured its leaders and cadres by detaining them in custody, and flayed the act of torture.
