This is the second time the district court has remanded Ram Prasad Adhikari for 10 days. Monday was the last day of the origional remand period.[break]
According to police Inspector Jibalal Chudali, who is also deputy spokesperson at the district police office, the remand extension was granted by Judge Binod Mohan Acharya.
Under the law, police can hold a person for 25 days from the date of arrest for investigation purposes. After completing the investigations, police submit their report to the district attorney´s office, which then files the case.
Meanwhile, the nine legal professionals defending Adhikari have said the remand extension was not necessary. Pleading for the defendent, advocate Dharmaraj Acharya expressed dissatisfaction over the remand extension.
"The government itself had decided not to prosecute the case, but the probe has now resumed. This is not in accordance with the law," said Acharya.
On June 5, 2004, Maoist cadres had abducted 19-year-old Adhikari, a resident of Phujel VDC-7 of Gorkha District, from Ratnanagar Municipality-1 in Chitwan and killed him a day later. His parents had identified the killers and filed an FIR against with police.
