KATHMANDU, Sept 8: Ghanshyam Bhusal, general secretary of the Nepal Communist Party (Unified Socialist), claimed on Saturday that all major political parties remain tight-lipped on corruption cases involving more than Rs 400 million due to an informal understanding among themselves.
Speaking at an event to mark the launch of Constituent Assembly member Hari Roka’s book entitled ‘Alternative Economy’ on Saturday, former lawmaker Bhusal mentioned that any corruption case involving more than Rs 400 million has generally been undertaken with consensus among major political parties.
Reforming Anti-Corruption Legislations
Bhusal pointed out that major corruption cases cannot occur without the involvement of parties such as the Communist Party of Nepal-Unified Marxist and Leninist, Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist Center), and suggested that even his own party could be involved in such scams. Bhusal claimed that such malpractices have compromised the legitimacy of politics, parties, and the country itself.
Former lawmaker Bhusal also argued that only after political parties and their leaders are free from corruption can the nation move towards socialism. He criticized populism for ruining socialism in Nepal, and accused Prime Minister KP Oli of distorting the concept of socialism the most. He argued that Prime Minister Oli’s focus on populist projects like construction of railways and view towers has misrepresented socialism.
Bhusal added that Nepal cannot achieve self-reliance in agriculture without creating a party that does not engage in corruption. He also expressed that if the government is resolute and acts accordingly, it is possible to achieve self-reliance in agricultural production within five years, and eliminate poverty and unemployment within twelve years.
