CJ Rana was under suspension from February 13, 2022 after the MPs of the ruling coalition filed an impeachment motion against him. However, the General Secretary of the Federal Parliament, Gautam, issued a letter on December 7 saying that the impeachment motion against Rana had become ineffective.
Purnaman Shakya, president of the Supreme Court chapter of Nepal Bar Association, filed a writ petition against the letter on the same day. The hearing on the petition is scheduled to begin shortly.
Rana was preparing to resume his duties at the Supreme Court on the same day he received the letter lifting his suspension. However, he could not go to the Supreme Court that day due to protests and sit-ins by lawyers.
Under the leadership of the Nepal Bar Association and the Supreme Court Bar Association, even today, lawyers are preparing to organize sit-ins. The security system of the supreme court has been tightened to prevent any untoward incident.
