“We will reject any constitution promulgated by shelving thorny issues,” former deputy prime minister Gachchhadar, who recently returned from a week-long visit to New Delhi, told Republica. “We may take any move against such a statute.”[break]
When asked, if they were they ready to renounce their Constituent Assembly (CA) membership, he said, “We have not taken that decision so far.”
Emphasizing on the need for concluding the peace process prior to finalizing the draft of the new constitution, Gachchhadar said CA term can be extended for one or two months if need be but only after concluding the peace process. “Otherwise, the parties should go for a fresh election,” he added.
“It is my personal view that the parties should go for a fresh mandate. This has nothing to do with Indian leaders´ or officers´ opinion,” he said. “Though Sadbhabana Party leader Rajendra Mahato had said there is no point in extending the CA´s term if the House is not going to write the constitution, Indian leaders didn´t recommend any prescription for us.”
Gachchhadar was of the view that the parties should be ready to promulgate a “people´s constitution” as lobbied by the Maoists and another “democratic republic statute” as proposed by the democratic forces. “We can pass one of the two statutes by a majority,” he said.
