The Sandman

The Sandman is a powerful work by Neil Gaiman. Since its launch in 1989, it has turned out to be extremely popular. The series is about seven brothers and sisters, namely, Destiny, Death, Dream, Desire, Despair, Delirium (who was previously Delight) and Destruction who are in charge of the realms their names describe. Bound in ten collections, however, the plotline and story needs close following, as they take you back and forth, visiting the past again and again. This would be a very interesting read if you're looking to experience the magnificence and the bizarre.

Avengers

There isn't anyone who is oblivious to the fame of the Avengers. This team of superheroes has garnered a wide range of fan following ever since it was published by Marvel Comics, in1963. Although the film consists of a select few heroes, the comic series compiles stories of 20plus superheroes. If you're curious about the life and actions of the other superheroes, then you'll be pleased to know that Stan Lee has been generous with the Avengers series. Visually exciting and rich, the comic books are sure to cure your hunger for some superhero action.

Watchmen

The Watchmen is recognized for its mature content, often taking the readers on a journey ridden with realism and psychological depth. Created by writer Alan Moore and artist Dave Gibbons, this is about American superheroes whose presence has brought forth changes that have changed the history. It was first published as a 12-issue miniseries from DC Comics. Starting with an assassination, it unfolds to a thrilling ride, full of conspiracies. Watchmen has been praised for its sophisticated presentation of the superheroes, which eventually leads to the question about the thin line between heroes and villains.

Cyanide and Happiness

Among the list of web comics that has surfaced in the 21st century, Cyanide and Happiness undoubtedly tops the list with its gory yet hilarious comic strips, sometimes even creating controversies. Written and illustrated by Rob DenBleyker, Kris Wilson, Dave McElfatrick and Matt Melvin (until August 2014), it was first published in the late 2004-early 2005, on their website explosm.net. Although the characters are nameless, some regular characters like Obese Maurice, The Personal Space Invader and Tall Justin make their appearances. The popularity of Cyanide and Happiness has even led to the animation and interactive story series.

Dennis the Menace

The mischievous young Dennis has covered the comic strips of local and international newspapers since March 1951. It was originally created, written and illustrated by Hank Ketcham. If you're familiar with Dennis' well-meaning but usually-ending-in-fiasco intentions that antagonizes his neighbor, Mr. Wilson, you'll also know the humor it ensures for its readers, which are equally thought-provoking. The comic follows the interaction of a five-and-a-half-years-old brat with his parents, neighbors and friends, giving the readers a regular treat coming from his innocent thoughts. No wonder this child is so famous.

It's a Good Life, If You Don't Weaken

First appearing in 1993 as a creation of Canadian cartoonist Seth, this fictional yet presented as autobiographical work made into the list of '100 Best Comics of the 20th Century' list in 1999. The story is of his adventures when he stumbled upon the work of Jack "Kalo" Kalloway in The New Yorker and sets onto a journey to know more about this obscure cartoonist. It then follows the tale of how he finds his own childhood hometown in Southern Ontario. The cartoonist often deals with melancholy and nostalgia in it, where the future is dreaded; hence, allowing the childhood memories a upper hand in his thought process. The fine and meticulous details in the artwork landed proper recognition for the cartoonist.

V for Vendetta

In the list of comics featuring superhero characters, V is probably an unlikely, unidentified soul who hits the vengeance act spot on. He's a character who, with his intelligence and skills in explosives, martial arts, philosophy, computer hacking and chemistry, kills the enemies from the infamous Larkhill Resettlement Camp. Well hidden under his Guy Fawkes masks, he claims that he is 'an Everyman, an idea with a mask and a hat and a cloak.' Created by Alan Moore and illustrated by David Lloyd, it was published by Vertigo. The comic was also adapted to the big screen in 2006, starring Hugo Weaving as V and Natalie Portman as Evey Hammond.

The Adventures of Tintin

Captain Haddock's cynical tendencies, the twins, Thomson and Thompson and their antics, and Professor Calculus are the regulars of the Tintin series. Tintin's adventures are not a visual pleasure, what with the Belgian cartoonist Hergé's signature Ligne claire (clear line) drawing, Tintin's quick wit and calmness in the calamity makes it a rational read. Tintin's detective flair, mixed with his journalistic talents takes the readers to a well crafted story that borders on fantasy, science fiction, political thrillers and mysteries. Since its appearance in 1929, it has sold more than 200 million copies and been translated into 70 languages.
