KATHMANDU, May 6:  Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) has drastically slashed load-shedding hours to two to three hours a day due to the closure of factories and businesses owing to the ongoing indefinite general strike called by the Maoists.

Shersingh Bhat, Director of Load Dispatch Section at NEA, said load-shedding is being imposed only during the night time. He said the total demand of electricity has gone down by 100 to 150 MW due to the closure. [break]

In normal times, there used to be a deficit of more than 400 MW and NEA had imposed a 12-hour load- shedding daily. Bhat said the huge gap between demand and supply has decreased.

The NEA has also been using less water flow than the normal as the demand has gone down. Bhat said water of Kulekhani Hydroelectric Project is being used only in the peak demand time of 6 to 9 pm.

The melting of glaciers has increased flow in snow-fed rivers resulting in more production of electricity in run of the river projects.

In the driest season this year, total production from internal power projects was 210 MW and now due to the increment of water discharge in run of the river projects the production has reached 370 MW.
