Climate change is alarming problem: PM

KATHMANDU, June 5: Prime Minister Jhala Nath Khanal has said that climate change caused by the emissions of greenhouse gases has been an alarming problem worldwide.



Prime Minister who is also the chairman of the Environment Conservation Council and Climate Change Council expressed such opinion while speaking at a programme organized on the occasion of the World Environment Day Sunday.[break]



Saying the world community was suffering from the impacts of different kinds of environmental problems and environmental degradation, the PM added climate change has been a major issue of debate in both the developed and underdeveloped countries.



The PM said deforestation, acid rains, floods, landslides and soil erosions were the main challenges in the world caused by the climate change.



PM Khanal further said excessive emission of the greenhouse gases by the industrial nations has created unusual and unexpected changes in the climate and the Himalayan countries like Nepal were facing adverse affects. Agricultural outputs, water resources, health sector and forests have adverse effects and glacial lakes were at risk due to climate change, said the PM.



He said a Climate Change Council chaired by Prime Minister has been formed and it has been carrying on its responsibilities to address the issues related to the climate change as per demand of the time.



Regarding the climate change, Nepal has prepared a national adaptation programme and is in the phase of implementation by targeting the communities that are at high risk, said Khanal.



The government has banned for the use of plastic bags with that are less than 20 microns thick and other products of plastic completely at the Singhadurbar premises as an effort to aware people symbolically regarding the environmental conservation.



On the occasion, Prime Minister Khanal said he will pave the way for the national consensus government as per five-point agreement signed on May 28 adding that when the alternative to the current government was presented for the sake of peace, constitution and national consensus government. He said, “I am ready to resignbut the nation should get peace and constitution."
