Cleaning up for the weekend

KATHMANDU, Nov 2: Dashain, sadly, is now way gone and it’s time to get set go for the upcoming weekend of Tihar festivities with shopping, and most importantly, cleaning up your homes.

Here are some tips to make your homes sparkle. In addition, this could very well turn out to be, with proper division of tasks, a fun family activity.[break]

Make a checklist:

• Brooms/dusters with long handles/scrubbers/old toothbrushes

• Old clothes/rags, sponges, vacuum cleaner, all-purpose cleansers, old newspapers

• Buckets with handles, mugs, spray bottles

• Gloves, masks, aprons, eye goggles

• Step-ladder or a sturdy stool

Dust down the ceilings and corners

There might be a spider’s web in the corner of your room that you never bothered to clean up just because you were too lazy to stretch your hand that far. Ask someone to hold the stool, if you need to step on one to reach the ceiling. Remember, always safety first. Using a mask and eye goggles are, therefore, highly recommended.

Dust wall art

For framed art or photographs or posters, use a light damp cloth to wipe the frames and glasses.

Change those curtains; air your beddings; dust the rugs

Maybe you haven’t noticed the dust gathering on your pretty summer curtains. With the change of season, perhaps a new and clean set of curtains would do better to your living rooms or bedrooms. Pick darker and rich shades.

Take out your bedding – i.e., pillows and mattresses – and put them out in the sun. With the monsoon over, make the best out of the autumn sun before it gets too chilly soon.

Clean out those kitchen cabinets, gas stoves and utensils.

Bring out all your utensils and clean up the cabinets. You may have several kitchenware and silverware that you hardly use throughout the year. If you hardly use that non-stick pan or coffee mug, why not store it away and make some space?

Mix some vinegar and water in a spray bottle and use it to clean kitchen countertops. It also helps to remove soap scum. The solution is also effective on bathroom tiles. However, never mix vinegar with detergent because it releases harmful gases.

Wipe your furniture and windows

Get an all-purpose cleaner or a furniture polish for your sofas, tables and chairs. Wipe in the direction of the wood. For windows, use old newspapers to

wipe them off after applying some all-purpose cleanser. Crumple up the paper a bit and start wiping. Rags tend to leave lint residues on windows; therefore, paper is the best way to get a streak-free shine.

Sweep and mop the floors or vacuum

Sweep all the floors before you begin mopping. Get that broom and reach under the bed to get rid of all the dust underneath it. You might just find that missing sock, too.

Empty out all dustbins

Separate the biodegradable and non-degradable garbage in two separate containers. Maybe it’s time to start a compost pit for the perishable in your backyard, if you don’t have one yet.
