KATHMANDU, May 8:  Chief Justice Ram Prasad Shrestha on Saturday said people´s fundamental rights can not be protected and exercised in the absence of an independent and efficient judiciary.

Issuing a statement on the occasion of Law Day on Saturday, Shrestha said, “The judiciary functions as per the constitutional, legal and basic norms of the judicial system. And, people´s fundamental rights as guaranteed by the constitutions can not be exercised and protected without an independent, free, fair, competent and efficient judiciary.”

Chief Justice Shrestha said fundamental rights, constitutional supremacy, rule of law, human rights, independence judiciary, basic norms and values of democracy can only address the people´s aspirations.

“Thus, such provisions should be guaranteed in the new constitution to be promulgated in near future,” the statement added.
