Civil society marks Republic Day

KATHMANDU, May 29: The Civil Society members that have contributed remaining in the forefront in the People´s Movement II marked the Republic Day organizing separate programme, today.



During the programme organized by the Citizens´ Campaign for Nationality and Democracy of the Professional Alliance for Peace and Democracy (PAPAD), in New Baneshwor, today, the participating speakers stressed on the need of unity among the democratic and republican forces once again to protect nationality and democracy.



The PAPAD representatives organized the separate programme to mark the Republic Day instead of participating in the programme officially organized by the government at Tundikhel.



They suggested the need of holding election immediately for political stability and withdraw the decisions that were made against the public mandate and spirit of the democracy by the political leadership.



They complained that it has been a matter of worry to have the situation of marking Republican Day separately by the government, political parties, and the civil society within five years of the establishment of republican system.



The representatives of the civil society have opined that it was not possible to take the democratic system to its destination until the environment for a free and fair election was ensured, brought the guilty of the Rayamajhi Commission report to book, and end impunity from the country.



The speakers said that the peace loving Nepalese were saddened by the separate functions organized to mark the Republic Day instead of marking it in a delightful manner.



They said it was against the sprit of separation of power to make same person as the head of judiciary and executive and drew the attention of Chairman of the Interim Election Council (IEC) to resign from Chief Justice immediately.



Some of the leaders of Nepali Congress, CPN (UML), CPN-Maoist also took part in the programme and expressed commitment to the campaign of the civil society.



Former Constituent Assembly Chairman Subash Nembang, NC leader Laxman Ghimire, UML General Secretary Ishwar Pokhrel, central member of the CPN-Maoist Maheshwor Dahal, among others, were among the leaders participating in the programme and expressed commitment to the civil society´s campaign.







The other speakers of the programme are civil society leader Gauri Shankarlal Das, Chairman of the Nepal Bar Association (NBA), Hari Krishna Karki, General Secretary Sunil Pokhrel, former NBA Chairman Shambhu Thapa, President of the Federation of Nepalese Journalists, Shiva Gaule, Chairman of Nepal Medical Association Dr. Anjani Kumar Jha, and Mira Kayastha, mother of Mukesh Kayastha, who was critically injured in the People´s Movement II, among others, stressed the need of exerting pressure to political parties as their activities had led towards undemocratic acts and anarchism.
