Citizenship provisions shouldn't undermine sovereignty: Experts

KATHMANDU, July 8: Legal and constitutional experts have suggested to the Constitutional Assembly (CA) not to incorporate such citizenship provisions in the new constitution that would undermine national sovereignty.



Experts floated such opinion during an interaction organized by Constitutional Lawyers´ Forum (CLAF) on Friday.[break]



“The CA must not incorporate such citizenship provisions in the new constitution that would undermine national sovereignty, national security and integrity,” said Constitutional Expert Dr Chandra Kanta Gyawali.



“Citizenship certificate should be issued to foreign nationals only after assessing their contributions to Nepal,” he added.



Legal and constitutional experts also demanded with the government to do away with discriminatory citizenship provisions.



Speakers including Constitutional Committee Chairman Nilamber Acharya, CLAF´s former President Kumar Regmi also suggested to the CA and government authorities to make arrangements for hassle-free distribution of citizenship certificates.



More than two dozen female lawmakers also attended the interaction.
