KATHMANDU, April 3: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CIB) of Nepal Police on Friday arrested an absconding 35-year-old man, who was convicted of murdering a teenage girl after gang rape in Chandragadhi-3 of Jhapa on October 15, 2000.

According to SP Kiran Bajracharya of CIB, Manoj Khadka from Chandragadhi-3 of Jhapa was arrested from Thapagaun, New Baneshwar of Kathmandu. The Supreme Court (SC) on September 2009 had sentenced Khadka along with two others to life on September 14, 2009. Of the three convicted, one is still at large and another accused identified as Sitaram Basnet was also arrested from Koteshwar in November last year and has been serving term in Central Jail, Sundhara.

According to the police, those arrested were convicted of murdering Sandhya Rajbanshi, 14, of Chandragadhi-3, Jhapa. They had gang-raped Rajbanshi before murdering her in the Charaali jungle of Jhapa district. They hanged her on a tree in an attempt to attempt to project the murder as suicide. But during the autopsy it was found that the girl had been gang-raped before being murdered.

Though the Ilam Appellate Court on April 10, 2002 acquitted the accused, the police moved the apex court challenging the appellate court's verdict.
