KATHMANDU, Sept 15: The Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) has filed a graft case at the Special Court against former vice chancellor of BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences (BPKIHS), Balbhadra Prasad Das, on the charge of amassing property worth Rs 77.19 million illegally.

Issuing a press statement on Tuesday, the anti-graft body said that Das amassed more than Rs 77.19 million illegally while serving in various capacities at the BPKIHS from 1993 to 2016.

During his public service, Das earned Rs 77.19 million while his expenditures in the same period stood at Rs 153.2 million. “The source of his expenditure (Rs 77.19 million) is still unknown,” the CIAA stated in the press release.

Based on its investigation, the CIAA moved the Special Court against the former top official of the BPKIHS in accordance with the anti-corruption laws.

Stating that Das has been found to have kept the amassed property in the name of his spouse Punam, the CIAA has made her as one of the defendants in its charge-sheet. In its charge-sheet, the CIAA has also demanded that Das’ property equivalent to the same amount that he amassed through illegal means be confiscated.
