The quasi-judicial body has decided to recover Rs 45.8 million from Laxminaraya Bastralaya for evading Value-Added Tax (VAT). The DRI had notified the owner of Laxmi Narayan Bastralaya about its decision on August 30.[break]
The CCCI on the day organized a protest gathering at Narayangadh. Officials of CCCI said they would intensify their protest in the coming days. Finding discrepancies in the details submitted to Inland Revenue Office and Rastriya Banijya Bank (RBB) while taking, DRI had concluded that the Bastralaya was involved in tax evasion.
But CCCI officials have argued that it wouldn´t be justifiable for the DRI to take action against a company on the basis of documents and details submitted to the bank for the purpose of burrowing loans.
A team led by Bharat Raj Subedi, under secretary of DRI, had conducted a raid on the Bastralaya in June last year. But the local businesspeople had attacked the team and torched their vehicle.
Tilachandra Bhattarai, president of CCCI, said the DRI took the decision to recover Rs 45.8 million from the Bastralaya just to seek revenge. The CCCI organized the protest after consulting with government officials and leaders of different political parties in Kathmandu as well as in Chitwan. The chamber has decided to announce banda in Chitwan on Friday to protest the decision.
Likewise, CCCI is also organizing a protest gathering of all entrepreneurs based in Chitwan and Nawalparasi on Monday. They are preparing to meet the Chairman of Interim Election Council Khil Raj Regmi and the director general of DRI before Monday.
Meanwhile, Laxmi Narayan Shrestha, owner of Laxminarayan Bastralaya, said he would move court against the decision.
