Local authorities say that, in addition to the zebra crossings, lane dividers are also needed due to the increased traffic. Narayanghat experiences traffic accidents almost daily.
According to SP Dhiru Basnet, lane dividers would be placed on the roads soon. The Chitwan District Police Office said the plans for these had reached the final stage and the lane dividers could be in place by mid-March.
Many local people say that they feel frustrated with the present service. Sita Adhikari, a vegetable stall owner from Madi, said that because of the traffic, it could take her hours to take her goods to the bus stand.
Meanwhile, other officials expressed hope. Plans to add zebra crossings and dividers along the busy two kilometer long stretch of the road between Bharatpur and Narayanghat were already being implemented, according to police official Arun Shah.
According to Chitwan CDO Maheshwar Neupane, the traffic problems in Chitwan would be resolved by increasing the police presence as well as increasing the number of lane dividers, crossings and traffic islands.
In the last six months, Chitwan saw 61 traffic accidents in which 64 people lost their lives. Compared to the past year, traffic fatalities have also increased.
