Now the children from Khalanga VDC-5 of Pyuthan district -Ashish Sahi,17, Akash Sahi,15, and Ajay Sahi, 9 - have is nothing but the burden of debt incurred for the treatment of their parents, besides eking out a living somehow. They are being sheltered by their uncle Rabi Shahi, who is hardly in a position to support them.[break]
“We were as good as bankrupt by the time my sister-in-law (the children´s mother Kamala) succumbed to brain tumor, but the tragedy didn´t end there,” says Rabi. “Had we enough money left after her death, we could have saved my brother.”
He wants someone would adopt the children, hoping that they would be better off that way.
Meanwhile, the eldest boy Ashish is now working as assistant driver in a local vehicle, shouldering the responsibility of his younger brothers.
He is eyeing overseas job to settle the debts gradually. “With some money paid off earlier, the debt of more than Rs 80,000 still needs to be covered,” says Ashish.
Both his younger brothers, who were studying in a boarding school, now are in a public school. Akash, who is studying in grade 8, says that he has been making some money by working as a laborer during the holidays.
“We have paid back some of the loan to the bank, but the interest amount always adds up in the end of the month,” complains he.
