KATHMANDU, July 1: More children are being sexually abused every year, a data of the Nepal police revealed. Increase in incest cases and gruesome crimes has challenged the police in its bid to minimize the crime.

The statistics of the Directorate of Women and Children Services (DWCS) of Nepal Police shows 386 rape cases have been registered within the 10 months of this fiscal year. [break]

In the very period, 111 cases of attempted rape have been registered.

Those figures are dramatically higher than that of last year’s when 376 rape cases and 101 cases of attempted rape were registered.

Police said that most of the rape victims are minors. “Things that we could not imagine before have begun to occur frequently in the society,” DSP Tara Thapa, who works at DWCS said. She said increasing number of cases of rape by family members and acquaintances have been registered in recent months.

Thapa informed about a gruesome case in which father raped his own daughters. Sanu (name changed), 5, and Sabitri, 7, were raped by their own father.

Police said that the father raped them after making them consume alcohol.

Police said that Sanu’s hand and Sabitri’s leg have been fractured as their father beat them with the handle of an axe.

The father had also threatened to kill them if they reported about his crime to anyone.

The two sisters had been living with their father after their mother eloped with someone else. The neighbors rescued the two girls four months ago.

Likewise, there are cases of sisters being raped by their own brothers. “Most of the minors aren’t capable of reporting the abuse they face to the police,” Thapa said, adding, “We can guess that the problem is much greater than what we normally imagine.”

“Whom should the children trust if they face abuse from their family members and acquaintances,” said Thapa.
