KALIKOT, March 14: According to the law, only those who do something wrong should be punished. But in Kalikot district jail, young Gokarna Shahi has been serving time for his mother's mistake for four years. Even though he has a relative to protect him, he is stuck in jail with his mother. His days are spent playing with his mom and the policemen.

Rajindra Shahi,27, of Narhari Nath Rural Municipality was sent to prison six years ago for an attempt to murder. After arriving at the prison, Rajindra gave birth to Gokarna. Now, Gokarna is also bearing the consequences of his mother's mistake as he is in a prison for doing no wrong.

Now, this child's everyday life unfolds within the prison walls alongside individuals serving sentences for various offenses. Rajindra Shahi, a 27-year-old mother who was imprisoned for an attempt to murder, is the child's entire world.

According to the jail administration, the four-and-a-half-year-old boy lives in the prison with his mother. This little boy, whose speech is still incomprehensible, endures a sorrowful existence confined within a cramped cell. At an age when he should be discovering the world, he struggles to comprehend his surroundings. Despite his innocence, he comforts those around him, hoping for someone to rescue him from this prison life.

Many people requested that education be arranged with proper care as keeping the son together for a long time would seriously affect his future, but the mother has been refusing to send him outside. There are more than three times the capacity of prisoners in the prison. Jailer Nar Bahadur Mizar said that there are 60 people including 54 men, 5 women and one minor.

Governmental and non-governmental organizations focused on children haven't shown any interest in rescuing Shahi. It is crucial for concerned agencies to act swiftly to prevent any negative impact on him.

Chief District Officer Ganesh Nepali said that even in terms of security, children should not be kept in a jail. He said, "There is a legal provision that children cannot be kept in prison no matter what they do."
