Parliament meeting adjourned till August 22

KATHMANDU, Aug 20: Despite the efforts of House of Representatives (HoR) Speaker Devraj Ghimire to discuss with the chief whips of the major parties to resume parliamentary proceedings, an agreement could not be reached.

Today's meeting at Singha Durbar brought together the chief whips from both the ruling and opposition parties, yet the discussions failed to bridge the gap in the positions between them regarding allowing parliament to function.

With continuous disruptions to parliamentary proceedings, Speaker Ghimire convened the meeting of the party whips to address the negative message this deadlock has been giving to the public.

Santosh Pariyar, the whip of the main opposition party, stated that the meeting was inconclusive after the opposition party maintained its stand that it would further strengthen the obstruction of the arliament.

Nepali Congress, CPN (Maoist Center) from the ruling coalition and CPN-UML, Rastriya Swatantra Party and Rastriya Prajatantra Party from the opposition parties participated in the meeting.

The meeting of the HoR called on Sunday has been adjourned till Tuesday due to lack of consensus.

The main opposition party CPN-UML has been obstructing parliament, demanding the formation of a parliamentary probe committee to investigate gold smuggling. Due to this, parliament has not been able to function and the ruling and opposition parties have failed to come to a consensus on the matter.

Although the HoR meeting was scheduled for 1 PM today, the meeting could not be convened. Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal is currently engaged in discussions with the nationally-recognized parties in an effort to lift the obstruction in parliament.
